George Fox University Men’s and Women’s Basketball journey to La Grua, Dominican Republic

We had the honor as the men´s and women´s basketball team and athletic staff of George Fox University to journey to Puerto Plata in the community of La Grua. For 10 days we were able to fully immerse ourselves into the small community and serve the locals in a way that we will never forget. The community we stayed in opened up their school for us to reside in for the duration of our stay. They not only provided us with beds and mosquito nets to keep the bugs away, but they also served us delicious native foods. As a whole, this experience has opened our eyes and shown us the value of a tight knit community.

Courts For Kids is such an impactful organization, helping us see how much joy something as simple as a basketball court can bring to a group of people. As a whole, we were able to join forces with some of the locals and create a safe space for them to enjoy the game of basketball. Over the span of 2 full days, we mixed concrete and shoveled gravel with the sun beating down on us like never before. However, the importance of the project ultimately trumped the temporary uncomfort. It was so rewarding seeing how many smiles were brought to the faces of the community members after our project had been completed.

Not only were we able to connect with the community through the building of a basketball court, but we were also able to see how big of a presence basketball has in the town of Imbert. We got the opportunity to not only support as fans, but also compete against them in a tournament. Our men's and women's teams were able to experience a whole new aspect of basketball that most teams aren't able to. Our women's team not only competed hard, but were also able to take home two wins and the championship trophy. Our men's team was able to pull out a tough overtime victory in the first game, but unfortunately fell short in the championship. Although it hurt to lose, it was super cool being able to see how impactful the win was for the local team of Imbert.

As a Christian university, we had the chance to attend a local Dominican church service. The pastor incorporated our teams into his sermon and prayer, which was truly such a blessing. It allowed us to not only dive deeper into our faith, but also see how God is working in communities all around the world. In addition to seeing how God is working in the communities, we were also able to step out and experience the beautiful scenery this country has to offer. As a team we got to explore the local beaches and embark on a zipline/waterfall excursion.

Not only were we able to grow in our relationships with the locals, but we were also able to get closer as an athletic department. It´s rare that multiple teams are able to have the opportunity to participate in a getaway such as this one. We learned so many valuable lessons that we are looking forward to bringing back to our university. We would like to ultimately thank the Courts for Kids organization for blessing us with this opportunity.

Volunteer Quotes:

One thing I learned from the community is to live in the present moment more. Back home I feel like people are frequently distracted with phones/social media and it prevents a lot of conversation and ability to stay present. This is something I will bring back with me and actively try to implement in my life.
~ Alex Brown

The most difficult part of going home will be integrating back into a society that is heavily influenced by self interest. While home, we use technology in ways that kill time for personal pleasure, rather than for the purpose of true connection. This was an experience truly life changing, soul filling, service focused opportunity.
~ Brendan Jones

What I learned about this community was how joyful everyone is no matter the circumstances. The locals here live a simple life but it doesn’t stop them from loving each other and living a grateful life. It makes me want to appreciate the moments and people that I can take for granted at times at home.
~ Mia Skoro

One thing I learned is how the Lord is present throughout the world. People here live such different lives and in all honesty, encounter much more hardships than me or most people in the US. To see them being present and so passionate in the church service was so inspiring to me.
~ Bella Arrisgado

Something I understand more clearly now is how much we as a humans need each other and community in our lives. Not having phones and really being included to such a small group was such a blessing. We spent so much intentional time together without the distractions of phones and we experienced so much joy and peace. I felt so filled up from the constant fellowship and community.
~ Kylie Ritter

I feel like this trip has showed me how important community and family is. Being able to see how these people’s families are such an important parts of their lives, makes me realize how important it is to cherish the time when I’m with all my family.
~ Maddie Schumacher

My favorite memories from the trip were connecting with the community, specially being able to connect with the kids despite the language barrier. I also thought it was great to grow closer with everyone who came on this trip. One thing I learned from the community is that richness has nothing to do with money or materialistic things. I saw their richness in their compassion and joy despite materials or lack of them.

Community Quotes:

The opportunity to share with the students of George Fox University in the construction of a new space for the sport and fun of La Grúa community in Imbert, Puerto Plata was a wonderful experience. I thank all our dear volunteers for sharing their time and affection with me and our communities. I already miss you, my dear boys and girls.
~ Miguel Gonell

I had an amazing experience with Courts for Kids! I loved getting to see the cultural exchange between the George Fox University students and the community of La Grúa. It’s so beautiful to see people come together, making connections that break language and cultural barriers to complete a goal. I know everyone involved will remember the experience forever and the basketball court will serve the community for many years to come.
~ Madalyn Heinle, Peace Corps Volunteer Dominican Republic ‘23-‘25

It was very gratifying to share with young men and women that together we were able to successfully complete the construction of the La Grúa community court, which will serve as a recreational and athletic development center for the children and young people who will be gradually introduced to the game of basketball. I also had the opportunity to meet wonderful people from the community with whom I promise to keep in touch over time. All I wish is much success for all these young people and for the teachers, as well as some of the professionals from the Peace Corps, so that this may be the beginning of many exchanges or visits to our beloved, charming town.
~ Carlos Lopez

I want to thank God for allowing me to serve my community. As always, it was an excellent experience with the group from George Fox University, USA. Very good behavior from the entire group, many lessons learned, and I wish that God allows me to continue helping. May God always bless you for such a beautiful work. Blessings always.

On behalf of the community of La Grúa, we would like to express our most sincere gratitude to CFK, the students, and Mrs. Marlenis Díaz for the wonderful project they have brought to our community. This project will have a positive impact on children and adolescents throughout the area, which represents great satisfaction for us as community members. We first thank God and then all of you for your excellent work and dedication. We wish that the Lord bless you today, tomorrow, and always, and that you continue carrying out works like this one that illuminate the future. The most beautiful gift is to serve and extend a hand to those who truly need it, and you have shown that spirit of help. May God guide each of your steps so that you continue being of great benefit to our community. We feel fully satisfied and grateful. The exchange we carried out was a historic event for us: it is the first time we have had such an experience, where you were able to work, share, and eat with us. It was a great source of joy and a special welcome that filled us with pride. We hope that soon we can repeat this experience and once again have the honor of your visit.
~ Melvin Vasquez Valerio

My experience participating with CFK was excellent, since socializing, talking, and sharing are some of the things I enjoy the most. This project is very impactful for the community because it allows our youth to stay united through sports, each one showing their talents, with the hope that they continue developing and that they reach other communities with the same needs as ours. We are grateful for your time here with us. I carry you all in my heart. Thank you very much. Big hug.
~ Nereyda Padilla Valerio

We thank God first, and we also thank CFK and its team team who worked diligently so that today our community has our court. We are grateful as a community, and the young people are very happy with this project that we greatly needed. So, on behalf of the community, we thank you with joy and we trust in God that doors will continue to open for our community. Blessings to all, and may God continue giving you vision so that you keep bringing this much-needed project to other communities as well.
~ Frank de Jesús

We would like to extend a special thank you to Court for Kids for their generous contribution to the construction of our court. Their vision and commitment to youth development have made it possible for our community to have a safe and fun space for sports and growth. The court is not only a place for physical activity, but also a space for unity and development of social and emotional skills. We deeply appreciate their investment in the future of our children and youth. Their support will have a lasting impact on our lives and our community.
