Orphanage of Fundacion Red de Misericordia is located just outside the second largest city, Santiago, in the Dominican Republic. It’s home to near 100 kids from infants to teenagers who have been the victims of sexual abuse, domestic violence, or human trafficking. All children study at a nearby public school and live at the orphanage, which fully supports the physical, social, and emotional needs of the children, in addition to the religious studies which promote positive development for reintegration into society.
Red Misericordia began to form loosely organized sports activities, even without a court to play on, and where inspired to apply for a court project after seeing the positive impacts the sports have had on the children. With noticeable improvements in the discipline, positive communication, and teamwork skills, they have seen how sports enhance the lives of the children and hope to continue investing in further recreational activities for them.
For the past few years they have wanted to build a court of their own, but have been financially unable by themselves. This year Courts for Kids is partnering with Red de Misericordia and we need a volunteer group to help build this court by summer 2017! If you have a group of volunteers who are interested in cross-cultural travel, are open minded, and have a heart to serve please contact us, we would love to have your group travel to the Dominican Republic this summer and help build the court to make this dream a reality.
Courts for Kids will fully coordinate all logistical aspects of the trip for your group including flights, lodging, transportation, food, and activities. On the trip your group will travel to the orphanage where we will stay, work, and play with the kids as we help build a court for basketball and volleyball. During the entire trip we will be fully immersed in the Dominican culture, eating authentic food, learning and experiencing true Dominican way of life. We will also have the opportunity to see some of the natural beauty that this part of the country has to offer.
