From Kathmandu, we will travel together by private bus to a village called Kapiya in the Khairahani municipality in the Chitwan District in the Narayani zone of Nepal. The village is situated at an elevation of 1,000 feet above sea level and located 190 kilometers southwest of the Kathmandu Valley. This area of Nepal is very hot with monsoons in the summertime, but mild and dry in the wintertime, making December the perfect month for a court building project.
Kapiya is on the outskirts of Royal Chitwan National Park. The park is a successful testimony of nature conservation in the South Asia Region. In the near future, this village will be one of the potential eco-tourism destinations for visitors coming to the park. The community is comprised of 8,000 people, mostly from the Tharu ethnic group of the Chitwan district.
We will be building a multi-use sports court at the Shree Kapiya Higher Secondary School (pictured below). This is a public school with more than 800 students. The court will also benefit the local community as one of the only spaces to play in the surrounding area. Our community partner is We Volunteer Nepal, a Nepali organization which has been working to support this community and school for many years. We will be working side-by-side with the community, who is also fundraising and committing volunteer labor for this court project. We will be staying in home stays, which will provide the greatest possible immersion into Nepali life.
One day will be spent on safari at Royal Chitwan National Park where we will hopefully encounter the endangered Indian Rhinoceros among many other animals. Tigers live in the park, but are extremely rare to find.
